The Origins of Makahiki: Honoring Tradition and Lighting the Way"

Group of people dressed in traditional Polynesian attire during a cultural performance, with some standing and others kneeling, in front of pink umbrellas.
Three women dressed in traditional African attire, performing a dance with fans in an outdoor cultural event, surrounded by onlookers.
Three shirtless men in a tropical setting, one holding a large rock with a strained expression, another watching with a serious look, and the third touching his leg with his arms crossed.

The celebration of the New Year in ancient Hawaii began with “Makahiki,” a festival that started with the appearance of the constellation Makaliʻi (Pleiades) in the night sky, typically around October. This celestial event would light the way for a season dedicated to peace, renewal, and communal harmony. The period was marked by worship, games, and cultural festivities, all in the spirit of thanksgiving.

Our 2024 “Makahiki Games” event draws on this ancient tradition to celebrate community and connection, blending traditional Makahiki practices with modern activities. Enjoy thrilling volleyball matches, talent and discovery booths, live music, entertainment, onsite food, and more!
